Bedford
Branch Library To Be Renovated
A major renovation
of the historic Bedford Branch library at Franklin Avenue and Hancock
Street will begin in Winter 2001, and is expected to take between one
and two years to complete.

The Bedford Branch, the oldest public library in Brooklyn, was founded
in 1897. It was originally located in P.S. 3, a schoolhouse in a cornfield.
After two other locations, the library moved into its current location
in 1905.
Funding for the project ($2,800,000, of which $1,756,000 is allocated
toward construction), was provided by New York City Councilmember Annette
Robinson, with additional funding by Brooklyn Borough President Howard
Golden.
Planned improvements include new windows, lighting, finishes and furnishing
throughout the building; Americans With Disabilities Act accessibility
including new elevator, rest room and front door; fully renovated first
and second floors to accommodate new circulation desk, tables, chairs,
reference desk and vestibules; and improvements to heating, ventilation
and air conditioning. The auditorium, currently used as storage space,
will be completely renovated including a new stage, making it the best
equipped and most up to date in the Brooklyn Library system.

The renovated Bedford Branch will become the Brooklyn Public Librarys
main center for African-American literature and culture.
During construction, library service will be provided in a temporary facility,
location to be announced.
